STOOD THE TEST OF TIME FOR MORE THAN 3 DECADES AND COUNTING: ALIW BROADCASTING’S COMMITMENT TO THE FILIPINO AUDIENCE
Aliw Broadcasting Corporation is one of the Philippines’ established multimedia broadcasting companies, recognized for its enduring commitment to credible journalism, informative programming, public service, and quality entertainment.
Established on May 12, 1991 by the late Ambassador Antonio L. Cabangon Chua under the ALC Group of Companies, Aliw Broadcasting Corporation began its operations through the acquisition of DWIZ from the Manila Broadcasting Company.
EARLY DAYS
In its early years, the company focused primarily on strengthening its radio broadcasting operations, eventually expanding its reach through the establishment of FM stations across the country. Through the years, Aliw Broadcasting Corporation steadily evolved into a diversified media organization with a growing presence in radio, television, and digital media platforms.
DWIZ 882: “BOSES NG PILIPINO, RADYO NG TAO” ERA
DWIZ 882 (otso-otso-dos) serves as the flagship AM radio station of Aliw Broadcasting Corporation and has become one of the country’s recognized names in news, public affairs, and talk radio broadcasting. While the station’s frequency traces its roots back to 1949 under the callsign DZPI, DWIZ officially began operations under Aliw Broadcasting Corporation on May 12, 1991 following the company’s acquisition of the station. The test broadcast emanated from its former headquarters in Dominga Building along Chino Roces Avenue, Makati through a 25-kW transmitter.
During its early broadcast years, DWIZ pioneered the “Broadcast Tandem System,” a unique and dynamic radio presentation format wherein two broadcasters simultaneously delivered news, commentary, and analysis on-air. This innovative approach helped redefine AM radio programming in the Philippines and contributed to the station’s growing popularity among listeners seeking balanced discussions, credible reporting, and interactive public affairs coverage.
Carrying the iconic tagline “Boses ng Pilipino, Radyo ng Tao,” DWIZ quickly established itself as a station that gave voice to the concerns, sentiments, and aspirations of ordinary Filipinos. Led by respected broadcasters and journalists during its formative years, the station gained prominence through its extensive news coverage and public service-oriented programming, including its coverage of major national events
“HIMPILANG MAY TODONG LAKAS” ERA: STRENGTHENING DWIZ’S REACH AND IDENTITY
As DWIZ 882 continued to expand its influence throughout the 1990s, the station further cemented its reputation as one of the country’s leading AM radio stations through its strong signal reach, credible broadcasters, and public service-oriented programming. In 1994, DWIZ upgraded its transmission power from 25,000 watts to 50,000 watts — significantly widening its coverage across Mega Manila and neighboring provinces.
As one of the few radio stations in the Metro Manila market authorized to operate with such transmission power, DWIZ proudly carried the tagline “Himpilang May Todong Lakas,” a phrase that would later become one of the station’s most recognizable and enduring identities. More than simply referring to signal strength, “Todong Lakas” came to symbolize the station’s fearless journalism, powerful commentary, and strong connection with Filipino listeners nationwide.
With its enhanced reach, DWIZ became even more accessible to millions of Filipinos seeking reliable news, meaningful discussions, and timely public service programming. During this era, the station strengthened its roster of respected broadcasters, journalists, and commentators while continuously innovating its programming.
In 2000, DWIZ transferred its operations to its current headquarters at Citystate Centre along Shaw Boulevard in Pasig City, marking another milestone in the station’s continued growth and modernization.
Further expanding its reach beyond the Philippines, Aliw Broadcasting Corporation entered a partnership in 2003 with the Kabayan Radio and News Club, allowing selected DWIZ programs to be aired internationally for Filipino communities in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Over the years, DWIZ continued to strengthen its programming lineup and nationwide presence through innovative public affairs and commentary programs that resonated with Filipino audiences. In 2014, the station entered a strategic partnership with Radio Philippines Network to further expand the reach of its radio and television content across the country through selected regional simulcasts.
Continuing its commitment to improving broadcast quality and accessibility, DWIZ upgraded its 50,000-watt transmitter system in 2016 with a newly enhanced facility mounted on a 300-foot tower in Obando, Bulacan, significantly improving signal reception throughout Mega Manila and the Greater Luzon Area.
In 2023, DWIZ underwent major programming developments aimed at reaching a broader and more diverse audience. This also coincided with the relaunch of Aliw’s provincial radio stations under the DWIZ News FM brand, further strengthening Aliw Broadcasting Corporation’s growing nationwide news and information network.
97.9 HOME RADIO: THE FEEL-GOOD SOUND OF EASY LISTENING
97.9 Home Radio is the flagship FM station of Aliw Broadcasting Corporation and is widely recognized as one of the country’s premier easy-listening radio stations. Broadcasting on 97.9 FM in Mega Manila, the station has built a strong reputation through its relaxing music, light and comforting on-air atmosphere, and commitment to providing listeners with a refreshing alternative to mainstream radio programming
The station traces its roots to September 28, 1994, when it began test broadcasts as “Q97” with a soft adult contemporary format. It quickly established itself as Metro Manila’s “#1 Easy Listening Station,” attracting a loyal audience through its carefully curated mix of relaxing hits and feel-good music. Due to its early success, the format was eventually expanded to provincial stations nationwide, further strengthening the Home Radio brand across the country.
Throughout the years, Home Radio became known for its warm and soothing listening experience, embracing a “less talk, more music” approach that resonated with professionals, families, commuters, and listeners seeking comfort and relaxation through music.
Over the years, Home Radio continuously evolved through various programming changes while remaining true to its identity as a feel-good FM station dedicated to providing listeners with comfort, relaxation, and familiar music they can enjoy anytime.
In 2017, the station returned to its signature easy-listening format due to strong listener demand, reaffirming the sound that made Home Radio a beloved companion to generations of Filipinos.
Today, 97.9 Home Radio embraces a modern and seamless listening experience through its DJ-less, fully automated music programming format — allowing uninterrupted feel-good music to take center stage for listeners across Metro Manila and beyond. Expanding its presence through FM radio, online streaming, and digital platforms, the station continues to adapt to the evolving media landscape while staying committed to the warm and relaxing atmosphere that has defined the brand for decades.
As it moves forward into a new era of broadcasting, 97.9 Home Radio remains dedicated to being a constant source of comfort, positivity, and familiarity for every listener — because no matter where life takes you, Home Radio will “Always Be Home.”
