Walang problema kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte kung sakaling ituloy ni dating Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno na tumakbo sa pagka-senador sa 2019.
Ito’y makaraang ihayag ni Senador Antonio Trillanes IV na magiging malakas na kandidato ng oposisyon si Sereno sakaling tanggapin nito ang naturang hamon.

Pero ayon sa Pangulo, sinayang umano ni Sereno ang pagkakataon na maging Punong Mahistrado ng bansa dahil lamang sa hindi pagiging tapat nito sa kaniyang tungkulin.
“She wasted the prestige of the chief justice [post]. Not everybody can be appointed as chief justice. It’s a gift from my God as I conceive him to be.”
Kasunod niyan, iginagalang naman ng Pangulo ang pasya ni Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio na huwag tanggapin ang pagka-Punong Mahistrado.
“He said that he’s not interested and he will not accept. But since it is really the tradition na ipasok mo talaga lahat, you cannot prevent that siguro. Because he is there, his name is there.”
“But the guy has already said that he is not interested, that he does not want the position, so ano bang magawa ko?”
