KOREAN FANS

MANILA, Philippines – A new platform called FanFlare will be launching in the Philippines with a mission to empower fan communities and act as a cultural bridge between Filipino and Korean pop culture. FanFlare is a community-driven fan support app that enables passionate local fan clubs to organize projects for their favorite artists in a transparent way – without the platform itself collecting any funds. By putting fans in the driver’s seat, FanFlare helps grassroots organizers rally fellow fans and directly access high-quality advertising placements for their idols, both locally and abroad, turning fan passion into tangible support.

FanFlare’s approach is unique in today’s fan project scene. Unlike other crowdfunding platforms that focus mainly on overseas ad placements, FanFlare is taking a Philippines-first strategy. This means Filipino fan groups can more easily mount campaigns for local impact – such as billboards along EDSA or events in local cafes – while still reaching global milestones. In effect, the platform is helping to “bring Korea” to the Philippines: it channels the enthusiasm for Korean idols and culture into homegrown fan initiatives, effectively importing a piece of the Korean fan experience to Filipino soil and vice versa. It’s not just an app launch; it’s being framed as a cultural bridge and a tool of empowerment for fans who have long loved K-pop and K-drama from afar. By enabling Filipino fans to showcase their idol support in visible ways, FanFlare contributes to the Korean Wave’s local momentum, almost like exporting a slice of Korean fan culture into the Philippines’ pop scene.

Empowering fan communities through transparency. One of FanFlare’s hallmark features is transparency in how projects are run. The platform does not handle fan-raised funds directly – a deliberate choice to build trust. Instead, it connects fan organizers with partners for placements, so contributions go straight to the intended project. This setup addresses a common concern in fan-driven fundraisers about where the money goes. With FanFlare, everything is open: fellow fans can see what has been pledged and exactly what it’s paying for. The result is a system where fans feel safer and more enthusiastic contributing to support their idols, knowing there’s accountability at each step.

Mentorship from Korean innovators is guiding FanFlare’s Philippine team. The startup is backed by mentorship from South Korea’s Hashpurple and KDOL, names that carry weight in the K-pop fan community. Hashpurple – the Seoul-based tech company that operates the global K-pop fandom app KDOL – has plenty of experience in fan-driven projects. Through KDOL, for instance, K-pop fans worldwide participate in voting competitions where top-ranking idols receive special rewards like subway billboard ads or even LED displays in iconic locations. That expertise is now being shared with FanFlare. “We want to bring the proven playbook of K-pop fan engagement to the Philippines, but adapted for the local fan culture,” a representative from FanFlare explained. With Korean mentors who have overseen successful fan advertisement campaigns (from Seoul subways to New York’s Times Square), FanFlare’s team is equipped to help Filipino fans achieve similar feats. The platform provides mentorship and logistical support to fan club leaders, guiding them on how to plan campaigns, negotiate with advertisers, and maximize social media buzz – effectively leveling up the fan-organizing skills of local groups.

Real-world fan campaigns illustrate the kind of impact FanFlare aims to amplify. In South Korea, it has become common for fans to celebrate their favorite idols’ birthdays or milestones by lighting up LED billboards and subway stations with messages and photos. These fan-funded projects can cost thousands of dollars, yet dedicated supporters make them happen regularly. Now, Filipino fans are beginning to do the same. Just this February, fans of P-pop girl group BINI pulled off an unprecedented project: a video billboard ad at Hapjeong Station in Seoul, South Korea, to honor member Maloi. The sight of a Filipina idol gracing a Seoul subway screen – funded by Filipino fan contributions – is a testament to how local fandoms are stepping onto the global stage. K-pop fans in the Philippines have likewise organized projects such as LED billboards in Manila for Korean artists’ birthdays and charity drives under their idols’ names. However, these efforts have often been confined to Facebook groups and ad-hoc coordination. FanFlare intends to streamline such fan-driven campaigns. Through the app, a small fan club in Cebu could get the guidance and platform it needs to rally nationwide support for, say, a birthday ad in a major Manila mall or even a group greeting on a Seoul digital billboard. By showcasing these success stories and making it easier to replicate them, FanFlare helps fan communities visualize the impact they can have.

Crucially, FanFlare’s Philippine-first ethos means it isn’t just about sending Filipino-funded ads to Korea or Times Square; it’s also about elevating fan culture within the Philippines. The platform emphasizes that local fan organizers can achieve big outcomes without always relying on international partners. For example, FanFlare can help a local K-drama fan club partner with a Philippine cinema chain for a special screening event, or assist a K-pop fanbase in securing a prime LED billboard in Makati for a fandom message. These are the kinds of high-quality placements and events that might have seemed out of reach before, but with a coordinated platform and expert mentorship, Filipino fans can pull them off. This not only fuels the fandom experience but also boosts related local industries (marketing, events, etc.), essentially bridging economies and cultures. Filipino businesses get to tap into the K-pop craze through fan-initiated campaigns, while Korean content gains even more visibility in the Philippines – a win-win that “sells” Korean culture in the best sense, by celebrating it publicly and collaboratively.

Early user feedback on FanFlare’s test group has been enthusiastic. Tech observers note that this is the first fan platform of its kind tailored for the Philippines, in contrast to existing apps that largely cater to voting or fundraising for projects abroad. Media analysts see it as part of a larger trend of localization of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) phenomenon – empowering local fans to not just consume content but actively promote and participate in the narrative of that content’s success. FanFlare’s team, on the other hand, is focused on building trust one campaign at a time. Success stories will be key: the more projects that successfully reach their goals via the app, the more momentum will build among fan communities. The company is already planning partnerships with local advertisers and Korean entertainment agencies to possibly co-sponsor some fan-led campaigns, which could further encourage fans to get on board.

As FanFlare kicks off its Philippine journey, its broader impact will be measured in how well it can fuse the collective spirit of Filipino fandoms with the polished playbook of Korean fan campaigns. If all goes well, we may soon see more Filipino-led ads celebrating Korean idols on EDSA’s giant LED screens, or Filipino pop idols appearing on Seoul’s billboards – visual reminders that fandom truly knows no borders. It’s a cultural exchange driven not by governments or corporations, but by fans themselves.

Long woven into Globe’s DNA, sustainability has guided its initiatives across digital inclusion, climate-conscious operations, and community upliftment.

With Globe of Good, the mobile network leader seeks to make its sustainability message more accessible and engaging to the general public—helping customers, employees, and partners recognize and participate in its efforts to create lasting, positive change.

AboitizPower’s Transition Business Group President and COO Celso Caballero III (R) engages with Schneider Electric Business Consulting Senior Director Kishore Natarajan (L) during a fireside chat on Schneider Electric’s Innovation Day, which marked its 30th anniversary in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines – The Transition Business Group (TBG) of Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) announced a strategic initiative to expand the application of artificial intelligence (A.I.) and data analytics to its coal-fired power plants in Luzon and Visayas.

The move continues AboitizPower’s “Project Arkanghel”, which modernizes the company’s existing conventional power plants into smart ones, helping ensure plant availability and reliability. Full implementation of the project will be rolled out in phases.

“The first phase of Project Arkanghel is up and running, currently in one of our circulating fluidized bed plants in Mindanao,” said AboitizPower TBG President and COO Celso Caballero III, referring to the 300-megawatt Therma South, Inc. in Davao City.

“We’re completing implementation in the Visayas this year and moving to Luzon next year,” he added, making the announcement during Schneider Electric’s Innovation Day celebration.

To recall, the 340-megawatt Therma Visayas, Inc. in Toledo City, Cebu was also named as one of the pioneer models for Project Arkanghel, while a site for Luzon has yet to be identified.

Project Arkanghel features establishing a Unified Operations Center, equipped with digital twin technologies, early warning and anomaly detection systems, and an “end-to-end” complete integration live asset health monitoring system. This Center enables engineers to anticipate potential issues and optimize plant operations.

A.I.-based systems have the potential to help maximize the efficiency of plants, which means lower heat rates, better fuel efficiency, reduced outage days and longer intervals between planned outages. With its data-driven intelligence, these systems enable engineers to do bolder and more accurate decision-making.

In developing Project Arkanghel, AboitizPower partnered with Thailand-based company REPCO NEX Industrial Solutions. The project also utilizes AVEVA Predictive Analytics, a Schneider Electric solution, to analyze historical data, recognize patterns, and provide early warning detection.

In the same event, Caballero cited the unique challenges faced by the Philippine energy sector, including rapidly growing energy demand, vulnerability to approximately 20 typhoons annually, and the persistent need for affordable power. The integration of A.I. and data analytics into its baseload power plant operations intends to help address these challenges.

“Power demand growth aside, if your plants are more available, you will be able to build fewer plants in order to cover for shortages,” Caballero explained.

The expansion of Project Arkanghel to AboitizPower’s coal plants in Luzon and Visayas is a pragmatic step in the company’s balanced energy mix strategy. It acknowledges the immediate need for stable, dependable and cost-effective baseload power while renewable energy capacities continue to grow.

In step with the country’s ambitions for its energy mix, AboitizPower aims to grow its portfolio of generation assets with renewables and selected baseload builds.

The Company seeks to increase its renewable energy portfolio from indigenous energy sources such as solar, hydro, geothermal, and wind. To date, AboitizPower, together with its partners, offers the largest renewable energy portfolio in the Philippines based on installed capacity under its operational control.

Release of pawikan hatchlings. TSI team members, together with pawikan handling experts from Ridge to Reef set free 67 pawikan hatchlings at the coastal area of the Therma South power plant in Binugao, Toril, Davao City

Davao City, May 2025 — Therma South, Inc. (TSI), an Aboitiz Power Corporation subsidiary, recently released 67 hatchlings from the first of five sea turtle (pawikan) nests found along the shoreline of the power plant in Binugao, Toril, Davao City. TSI team members, local barangay officials, and experts from Ridge to Reef Environmental Consultancy participated in the conservation event. Ridge to Reef also conducted a Marine Turtle Management Training for security personnel of TSI.

Close to 500 eggs were first discovered in April, after an Olive Ridley mother pawikan was observed in the area earlier this year. Experts relocated 115 eggs from the first nest to a safer location. Subsequent nests contained 76, 88, 108, and 109 eggs, respectively.

The plant’s coast has been a known nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles, with a nesting mother frequently returning and laying eggs. Ridge to Reef President Marie Antoinette Pana-Tautho explained that two factors could explain why the mother pawikan did not lay eggs on TSI’s shore during those years: “The gap in nesting timing from 2019 to 2024 may be attributed to the survival rate of previous hatchlings released in the wild, or the mother pawikan nesting on the nearby beach area instead,” she explained.

Thirty pawikan hatchlings were first discovered and released at TSI in December 2018. The next year, 303 hatchlings from four nests followed. Pawikan nests were found again in 2024, with 86 of 120 hatchlings released by TSI team members, officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau, and Aboitiz Cleanergy Park caretakers trained to handle pawikan hatchlings.

“It is very important to manage marine turtles, especially since we believe that according to a study in 2019, there are three species in the area: Olive Ridley, Green Sea Turtle, and Hawksbill Sea Turtle,” Tautho said.

A race for survival. Over 60 sea turtle hatchlings race to the sea after their release from the enclosure built to protect them from predators.

Currently, the Safety, Health, and Environment Department of TSI, led by Environmental Supervisor Geol. Reeka Angela Llenado, closely monitors the remaining pawikan nests. The team has built barricades around the nests to protect them from predators like birds, dogs, snakes, and even humans.

Olive Ridleys, while the most abundant of all the sea turtles, are considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

“We will continue to actively monitor our shoreline and help protect its marine biodiversity as part of our environmental stewardship and communal responsibility in its host communities of Davao City and Sta. Cruz,” shared Llenado.

SM scholar James Wong at the PPCRV Command Center in Sampaloc, Manila, volunteering to ensure transparent and efficient election monitoring.

Each year, the SM Group, through the SM Foundation College Scholarship Program opens doors for youth from vulnerable communities. The program follows a rigorous selection process, selecting students who show both academic promise and a strong passion for learning. It’s rooted in the Foundation’s mission to uplift lives through education and support those who aim to drive positive change.

James Matthew D. Wong, a 2015 scholar, continues to live out that mission. After earning his Electronics Engineering degree from Asia Pacific College, he built a career in the field and now works as a senior consultant. Beyond his profession, he remains committed to public service, actively volunteering to help ensure clean and honest elections.

dfdfg2

James Wong conducts a voter education session at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Jalajala, Rizal—one of the most remote parishes in the Diocese of Antipolo—as part of his grassroots advocacy for informed and active citizenship.

His involvement with the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) started back in high school. “I learned about PPCRV during the 2007 midterm elections when volunteers were mobilized in my home parish,” he shared.

That early experience sparked a commitment that has stayed with him through every election since. Over the years, he has taken on various roles—from poll watcher to diocesan coordinator, and most recently, as part of PPCRV’s national voter education and IT teams.

In the 2025 national elections, he was stationed at a data center of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), contributing his skills to help ensure the integrity of the process.

“As soon as I received the transmissions, I had to ensure they were sent promptly to the PPCRV Command Center,” he explained. The role gave him a deeper understanding of the technology behind the whole electoral process. “Receiving the results in their raw form reminded me of my data science training. I could even run my own analytics,” he added, crediting the guidance of his mentor, PPCRV IT Director Dr. William Yu.

Looking back, James credits his time as an SM scholar for shaping his mindset and values, especially during college. “Being an SM Scholar taught me that roadblocks don’t mean you have to stop—they mean you need to find another way” he said. For him, the program helped him grow both professionally and personally.

He sees giving back as a natural extension to what he received. “The program was an enabler for one to have the chance to succeed. It encouraged its scholars to swim the vast ocean and go far beyond our limits. We may be soaring high, but like they say, once an SM Scholar, always an SM Scholar. No matter how far we go, we’ll always find our way back—stronger, successful, and ready to give back,” he said.

As the foundation prepares to welcome a new batch of scholars, he encourages applicants and future scholars to get involved early. “Do not hesitate to reach out to organizations that need volunteers. Find what you’re passionate about and connect with groups that share your values. Working with these organizations gives you a chance to do what you love beyond school and the workplace, and allows you to create real impact in society. Change doesn’t happen overnight, it starts with small ripples from the good we put out into the world.”

Hapinoy (At1ndahan Inc.), a leading social enterprise dedicated to supporting Filipino sari-sari storeowners, has been selected as the Philippine grantee of the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific. This significant regional initiative, launched by Google.org in partnership with AVPN and supported by the Asian Development Bank, aims to expand access to artificial intelligence (AI) training and tools for underserved communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The AI Opportunity Fund in APAC has committed a total of $27 million to support 49 organizations across 15 countries, with a goal of training over 720,000 workers and 100,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The program emphasizes inclusive digital skilling and AI literacy to ensure no one is left behind in the region’s rapidly transforming economy.

Hapinoy’s mission perfectly aligns with this goal. Since its inception, the organization has empowered thousands of women microentrepreneurs to successfully run and grow their sari-sari stores by providing access to upskilling, robust supply chain networks, crucial financing, and essential digital tools. Now, through the AI Opportunity Fund, Hapinoy will introduce practical AI-based training and tools designed to help microentrepreneurs improve store operations, manage finances more effectively, and unlock new opportunities for growth.

“Through AVPN’s AI Opportunity Fund, we aim to empower sari-sari storeowners with practical AI tools that can transform their microbusinesses and uplift their families, bridging these women microentrepreneurs into the era of Artificial Intelligence,” said a Hapinoy representative. “Hapinoy’s approach will combine ‘High-Tech’ with ‘High-Touch’—the warmth of face-to-face community training with the scalability of digital platforms, making AI accessible and genuinely useful for daily sari-sari store operations. By helping microentrepreneurs embrace AI for store operations, financial management, and business growth, we’re not just helping these stores level up – we’re also impacting the communities they serve across the Philippines.”

Sanjay Gupta, President, Google Asia Pacific, stated in a blog post, “A shift towards an AI-powered economy needs to be fair and inclusive, ensuring all workers have the necessary knowledge and tools to participate. Through the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific and our ongoing collaborations, we’re committed to making sure everyone can benefit from the potential of AI.”

This effort builds on Google.org’s broader commitment to help communities thrive in the AI era. By supporting mission-driven partners like Hapinoy, the AI Opportunity Fund is creating a more inclusive digital economy—one where every entrepreneur, regardless of background or location, has a chance to succeed.

As the 2025 midterm elections approaches, Filipinos are turning to Google and YouTube for the latest election news. Recognizing this, Google and YouTube have taken proactive steps to connect voters to reliable information online.

When a viewer searches for something related to a 2025 senatorial candidate on YouTube, an information panel will appear above the search results that highlights the candidate’s information. This could include their political party and a click-through to Google Search to learn more.

On Election Day, YouTube viewers will find a prominent shelf on the homepage showcasing live coverage from authoritative news organizations. This shelf will feature streams in both English and Filipino, enabling viewers to follow the election news and results as they unfold. Furthermore on May 12, the Commission on Elections’ (COMELEC) “How to vote” playlist will be promoted on YouTube, providing Filipinos with relevant materials, requirements, and a step-by-step guide to voting.

On Search, Google’s ranking systems are designed to elevate authoritative information and provide context to voters on a variety of election-related information.

Safeguarding platforms from abuse

Protecting the integrity of elections also means keeping Google and YouTube products safe from abuse. The company has long-standing policies to keep its platforms safe, and these apply to everyone and for all types of content, including elections.

YouTube’s Community Guidelines determine what is not allowed on the platform and apply to all content, regardless of language, how it is generated, or political viewpoint, position or affiliation. Content that misleads voters on how to vote or encourages interference in the democratic process is prohibited on YouTube. YouTube quickly removes content that incites violence, encourages hatred, promotes harmful conspiracy theories, or threatens election workers. The latest Transparency Report shows the Philippines ranked 8th globally for videos removed for violating YouTube policies (over 153,000) between October and December 2024. Repeated violations of YouTube’s policies could lead to channel termination.

Helping people navigate AI-generated content

As more people interact with AI-generated content, Google and YouTube have introduced policies and tools to help people navigate this including:

Content labels on YouTube. YouTube requires creators to disclose whether the video they have uploaded contains any altered or synthetic content. Labels are then added to the description panel indicating this alteration, providing important context for viewers. For content about elections, viewers will see when a label is applied directly to the video player. These labels are applied regardless of the creator, political viewpoints, or language.

Providing voters with additional context. “About this Image” in Search helps people assess the credibility and context of images found online. The double-check feature in Gemini evaluates whether there is content across the web to substantiate its response.

Digital watermarking. Google is committed to finding ways to ensure every image generated through its products has embedded watermarking with DeepMind’s SynthID.

Industry collaboration. Google and YouTube joined the C2PA coalition and standard, a global cross-industry effort to help provide more transparency and context for people on AI-generated content. This brings C2PA’s technical standards for metadata to Ads, Search and YouTube.

For media organizations, Google trains the press to leverage AI technology through AI Workshops. This program equips publishers, editors, and business leaders at news organizations with the knowledge and tools to experiment with and learn about generative AI, using a structured framework with guidance from AI experts and industry mentors. Lessons and insights from the workshop can be applied to election news coverage.

Supporting media literacy programs and COMELEC

Google and YouTube will not allow political ads during the election cycle. Instead, the company is proactively supporting the COMELEC and media literacy efforts to ensure voters can access useful, trustworthy information across its platforms.

Google has been investing in local media literacy programs to teach readers to identify trusted information. This includes entering into partnerships with organizations like CANVAS in creating a media literacy magazine called YOUTHink. YOUTHink has been adapted for various regions in the Philippines, publishing in several languages including Filipino, Cebuano, and Ilocano.

In a collaborative effort to bolster election integrity, Google extended its support to COMELEC through specialized training workshops. These sessions detailed Google’s strategies for safeguarding elections on its platforms, best practices from YouTube to ensure platform safety during critical periods, and a thorough walkthrough of the reporting tools available to government partners. This enabled COMELEC to coordinate with YouTube more effectively to escalate content for review and appropriate action by YouTube on content that violates the platform’s policies.

“Supporting the elections is important to Google and YouTube. As Filipinos prepare for the May 12 elections, we are committed to robust collaboration with the government, industry, media, and civil society. Together, we will help ensure that voters have access to authoritative information and safeguard our platforms from abuse,” said Yves Gonzalez, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at Google Philippines.

“A well-informed electorate is fundamental to COMELEC’s mission for credible elections. We thank and commend Google for their continued, valuable contributions in ensuring Filipinos have accessible and reliable election information online, empowering them to make informed choices for the midterm elections,” said George Erwin Mojica Garcia, Chairperson of the Commission on Elections.
