SM Scholar Jonalyn balances a career that provides a secure and comfortable life for her daughter while maintaining a strong presence in her child’s life.

Decades of research consistently point to a link: women with higher levels of education are empowered to take control of their lives and drive positive change in their communities.

This deeply resonates with the SM Foundation, an advocate of educational advancement for over 40 years. Through its scholarship program, the SM Foundation has witnessed firsthand how education empowers youth, including young women, from low-income backgrounds to reach their full potential and become agents of positive change.

One of SM Foundation’s thousands of scholars is Jonalyn Sarmiento-Forneas, now thriving in an multinational IT company.

Pursuing dreams against the oddsJonalyn_LCS_2

(first from right) Jonalyn finished IT in 2014 with a strong desire to support her family and pursue personal growth

Jonalyn’s journey began amidst familial challenges, with separated parents and financial instability looming over her future. Her mother, a hard-working caddy and main provider of the family, would have had a hard time shouldering the burden of college for both her and her sibling.

“Without the scholarship, I would likely be unable to afford my tuition fees and other essential expenses required for attending college,” she shared, adding that the scholarship wasn’t merely a financial support but a door to better opportunities.

With the SM scholarship as the foundation for her dreams, she was able to focus on her studies and finish a course in IT in 2014.

Taking her scholarship with a deep sense of responsibility, she utilized her college years to gain industry knowledge and to hone life skills such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and time management so she can be better equipped once she enters professional settings.

Thriving in the real world

She immediately landed a position at SM Group’s Tagaytay Highlands, using her first year after college to apply her newfound knowledge, hone her skills, and gain valuable experience.

Years of hard work fueled by her desire to support our family and her own personal growth finally culminated in her becoming a project manager in an multinational IT firm. Advancing in a male-dominated field, she now leads the planning, executing, and completing projects, ensuring timely delivery of various projects.

But for her, success isn’t solely defined by professional achievements but by personal growth and fulfillment. Through her thriving seven-year career in tech, she now finds joy in mentoring and supporting others, cherishing moments where she can make a positive impact on someone’s life.

“Knowing that I’ve made a positive impact on someone’s life is rewarding in itself. It’s heartening to see my co-workers benefit from the information and guidance I offer, and I’m glad to be able to contribute to their well-being and success in whatever small way I can,” she said.

Jonalyn advances in a male-dominated field, now leading the planning, executing, and completing projects.

Beyond this, Jonalyn actively supports their company’s initiatives that provide access to education for those in need. For her, passing on the kindness she experienced through her scholarship is a way of perpetuating a cycle of social good.

From a student doubting whether she’ll be able to step into college, she has come far and has thrived in her corporate career, achieving a leadership role as a project manager in a male-dominated industry while playing an active role in her family’s life.

This success allows her to balance a career that provides a secure and comfortable life for her daughter while maintaining a strong presence in her child’s life.

Looking back at her journey, she said: “Keep working hard and nothing is impossible. People are bound to experience hardship but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.”

“I now have access to a wider range of job prospects, higher earning potential, and opportunities for professional growth and advancement. I can also provide support to my family financially and provide education to my child,” she capped.

4 SM Supermalls has consistently participated in the International Coastal Clean-Up, providing a platform for volunteers to contribute to a greener future.

In time for World Water Day on March 22, SM, a long-time partner of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – National Capital Region (NCR), celebrated their commitment to clean water at the recent 4th Gawad Taga-Ilog awards ceremony held at Park Inn by Radisson in SM City North EDSA. The Gawad Taga-Ilog is a search for the Most Improved Estero (waterway) in Metro Manila, and SM has been a consistent supporter of this local government-led project for the past four years.

The Gawad Taga-Ilog program recognizes the significant efforts of local governments, particularly barangays, in keeping Metro Manila’s waterways clean and trash-free. The theme, “Transforming Communities Through the Gawad Taga-Ilog,” emphasizes sustainability – a cornerstone of SM’s philosophy. It focuses on three core concepts: economic growth, environmental enhancement, and social inclusion.

This aligns with SM’s environmental initiatives, which include the Adopt-A-River/Estero Program, a partnership with the DENR and the local governments of Pasay and Paranaque. It focuses on improving water quality, cleaning up solid waste, and implementing sustainable solutions for the Pasay and Parañaque rivers. As part of a 5-year Memorandum of Agreement, SM works to decongest the river of garbage, improve water flow, and foster community participation through clean-up initiatives, engineering solutions, and educational materials.

SM’s donated trash-boat is being used to remove trash at Malabon Creek, behind SM City Sucat in Paranaque—a proactive step towards cleaner waterways.

Last year, SM championed the International Coastal Cleanup Day, gathering a team of over 17,000 volunteers and collecting a record-breaking 100,432.50 kg of trash across 15 SM malls in 12 locations nationwide.

SM Supermalls has consistently participated in the International Coastal Clean-Up, providing a platform for volunteers to contribute to a greener future.

SM plans to partner with Local Government Units (LGUs), to recycle water, which will be used in watering city landscapes, promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship.

By actively supporting initiatives like Gawad Taga-Ilog and implementing innovative solutions, SM demonstrates its unwavering commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future for our waterways and communities.

KSK_Rita Soltis_Iloilo City_1

Iloilo City farmer Rita Soltis proudly shows her vibrantly green vegetable garden.

Many passionate and devoted farmers continue to explore ways to address the age-old challenge of making agriculture a viable livelihood. They continue to seek ways to improve efficiency and yield as they play a key role not only in the country’s economy but also in securing access to fresh, nutritious produce for all Filipinos.

Putting focus on empowering farmers through education, SM Foundation, the social good arm of the SM Group, conducts its Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program, reaching out to low-income farmers across the country.

Since its inception in 2007, it has introduced modern farming techniques to roughly 30,000 farmers, including Rita Soltis of Iloilo City.

Eager to learn and earn

KSK_Rita Soltis_Iloilo City_2

SM farmer-beneficiary Rita Soltis reaps the fruits of the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan training program with a bountiful harvest.

Soltis, a long-time crops farmer, has always strived to hone her agricultural expertise. Through years of experience, she’s struggled to navigate the intricacies of the agricultural business and mitigate the impact of unforeseen challenges—from weather to pests—by planting watermelon and vegetables during off-season for their family’s consumption.

Through the program, she learned about how to keep up with times, prudently invest in mechanization, and other modern farming techniques.

While empowered with new set of skills, it was the business principle of Henry “Tatang” Sy Sr. that kept her going when times were tough: “Itinuro rin po sa amin ang life principles ni Tatang at nagagamit ko po ito sa pagne-negosyo. Sabi ni Tatang, ‘Recognize the opportunity.’

 KSK_Rita Soltis_Iloilo City_4

Expanding her business further, she founded “Dorime Garden,” cultivating various vegetables for sale, and creating a livelihood opportunity for a community member.

Since finishing KSK in 2023, the efforts she planted has been sprouting. This year, Soltis successfully harvested 50 kilograms of eggplants, which she marketed effectively through local community markets and weekend markets at SM Supermalls. Building on this success, she has established her own “Dorime Garden,” where she cultivates a variety of vegetables for sale.  This venture has not only expanded her business but also provided a livelihood opportunity for a member of her community.
