If you’re thinking about donating blood but don’t know where to begin, start here. From what to eat to what to wear, here’s a quick guide to help you prep (and stay chill) before the big day.

1. Start months early with healthy habits
   It’s best to prepare yourself several months in advance of donating to make the experience extra worthwhile. Eat iron-rich foods like spinach, beans, and lean meats. Drink plenty of water, and skip any tattoos or piercings in the four months before donating.

Who knows? This preparation might be your sign to start keeping healthy habits!

2. Drink your water
   Hydration is important when preparing for a blood donation, which should occur weeks or even months in advance. If you’re eyeing to donate, remember to keep your handy water bottle with you and go ahead to meet your hydration goals.

Being hydrated prior to and on the day of blood donation helps keep your blood pressure steady and makes the process safer and quicker.

3. Get good sleep the night before
   Who doesn’t love a good shut-eye? Aim for at least seven to nine (7-9) hours the night before to have a smoother donation.
4. Eat a good meal beforehand
   Eat your hearty meals, but not greasy, and vibrant greens 2–3 hours before you donate. Remember, don’t donate on an empty stomach to help avoid feeling dizzy, lightheaded, fainting, and other adverse reactions due to a drop in blood sugar and blood pressure
5. Wear comfy clothes with short sleeves
   Donating blood is one of the best excuses to wear your comfiest clothes!

To ensure your arm remains accessible, wear loose clothing and a top that allows you to easily roll up your sleeves. Cozy clothes help you stay relaxed during the donation.

6. Bring ID and your donor card
   You’ll need identification at most donation sites. Some places also ask for your blood donor card. Remember to keep them handy!
7. Skip the intense workouts
   For now, skip the runs or your workouts. It’s best not to engage in any hardcore gym sessions before or right after donating.
8. It’s okay to feel nervous 

The sight of a needle or blood or just the excitement of spreading social good might make you feel giddy, and that’s all okay. Just talk to the nurses, doctors, and other volunteers at the site, and they’ll be more than happy to help you calm down and relax.

9. Got existing conditions? Let your doctors and health professionals on site know. 

If you have any medical conditions or are taking medications, it’s important to let both your doctor and the blood donation staff know ahead of time.

Some conditions or meds might affect your eligibility or how you feel afterward. Don’t worry—this step isn’t meant to discourage you, but to make sure the process is safe and comfortable for you. Transparency helps protect both you and the people receiving the donation.

10. Tell someone about it!
    Bring a friend or talk to someone who’s donated before. Sharing the experience can calm nerves and make it more exciting.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls, through its flagship literacy program SM Book Nook, is calling on communities nationwide to help spark the joy of reading by donating pre-loved books as part of the SM Book Nook Book Donation Drive, starting July 7, 2025 in all SM malls across the country.

Anchored on the theme “Under the Same Sky: Share the Magic of Stories,” this initiative encourages mallgoers, tenants, partners, and communities to donate quality books that will benefit children, families, and readers from all walks of life. 

A portion of the books will be turned over to the National Library of the Philippines and its affiliate libraries, while others will support the expansion of SM Book Nook reading hubs to more SM malls and partner institutions nationwide.

“SM Book Nook was created to be more than a space—it’s a movement. With every book donated, we create ripples of knowledge, imagination, and inclusion. We believe that stories can bridge generations and uplift communities,” said Ms. Shereen T. Sy, pioneer of the SM Book Nook program under SM Cares.

The campaign aims to collect 40,000 books in line with SM’s 40th anniversary milestone. Each SM mall will serve as an official drop-off point, where specially designed donation boxes will be placed in strategic in-mall locations. Starting July 7, 2025, mall communities are invited to drop off pre-loved books in good condition—complete, clean, dry, and free from major damage.

Empower Communities Through Your Book Donations

Accepted books include fiction and non-fiction titles, children’s books and young adult literature, academic and reference books, as well as magazines and comics in good condition.

Beyond donations, the campaign also highlights SM Cares’ long-term vision to make every SM mall a hub for inclusive learning, community engagement, and shared hope—especially for young readers and future leaders.

This initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

With the theme “Celebrate Pride Love,” the event turned the mall amphitheater was transformed into a hub of celebration and entertainment. Attendees were treated to a dynamic lineup of performances by talented drag queens, youth advocates, artists, and allies—bringing color, creativity, and courage to every corner of the celebration.

Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) and SM Supermalls have officially sealed a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing held on Monday, July 1, 2025, at the SM Supermalls Headquarters in Pasay City. The agreement marks the beginning of a joint effort to empower Filipino cooperatives by giving them access to high-foot-traffic mall spaces through the SM Weekend Market — a platform dedicated to showcasing local products, homegrown talent, and Filipino entrepreneurship.

Local farmers showcase and sell their fresh harvest to shoppers at the SM Weekend Market, a platform by SM Supermalls that connects producers directly to consumers in high-traffic mall locations.

Under the agreement, CDA will endorse eligible cooperatives across the country to participate in the SM Weekend Market. In turn, SM Supermalls will make space available in key mall locations for a minimal fee—intended only to help cover maintenance costs. “The SM Weekend Market was born out of a simple but powerful idea — to give farmers and local producers, especially those in cooperatives, the chance to bring their goods closer to the people, in places they wouldn’t normally have access to,” said Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls. “With CDA as our partner, we are excited to open more doors and more mall spaces to co-ops across the country. This partnership will allow more communities to thrive, more stories to be told, and more Filipino-made products to be celebrated.”

The event marks the start of a nationwide collaboration between CDA and SM Supermalls, with more updates and market rollouts expected in the coming months.
