Pride in restrooms lifted the Muntinlupa City Government to the spotlight of the 2024 Oro Inodoro Awards, as the local government unit bagged two trophies, including the Grand Winner Award, for its excellent public restrooms.

The awarding recognized the best restrooms in various parts of the country through three (3) major categories, namely Offices and Schools, Commercial and Retail, and Parks and Terminals. The Muntinlupa LGU also finished on top of the Offices and Schools Category, edging other finalists University of Santo Tomas and Manila Broadcasting Company.

“Gusto nating magkaroon ng pleasant experience ‘yung mga gumagamit ng ating comfort rooms. Importante ang CR sa lahat ng facilities,” said Engr. Dynadelle Aranda, Muntinlupa City Government City Engineer/Acting Building Official, who also touted their wastewater management. “Sa pamamagitan ng ating sariling STP (Sewage Treatment Plant), we make sure na bago natin i-discharge ang wastewater, malinis po ito. Importante siya hindi lang para sa sanitation kundi sa health ng buong komunidad.”

Calle Café, a restaurant in España, Manila, took the plum in the Commercial and Retail category, beating the Grand Ballroom in Okada Manila and Cleanfuel’s C5 Amvel branch.

Meanwhile, Palacio De Memoria, a cultural landmark in Parañaque, won the Parks and Terminals major award over worthy finalists Vista Terminal Exchange and Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) earned the special award called Banyo ng Bayan, or the people’s choice award, which is judged through social media likes. Ayala Malls Cloverleaf took another special award titled Banyo Para Sa Lahat, which measured features that make restrooms inclusive and accessible to marginalized groups such as differently-abled persons, various gender expressions, and parents who need childcare equipment like diaper changing stations.

The grand winner took home a cash prize worth P30,000, while category winners and special awards winners each netted a P10,000 prize. The winners were honored in a ceremony held in Rizal Park Hotel, Manila, on November 19, which the United Nations proclaimed as World Toilet Day.

Marie Antonette De Ocampo, Maynilad’s SAVP and Head of Corporate Affairs and Communication, underscored the importance of the often-overlooked public restrooms. “The Oro Inodoro Awards remind us that public restrooms are reflections of our collective values and our commitment to providing safe and dignified spaces for all. By recognizing these exceptional establishments, we set a benchmark for others to aspire to and reinforce the idea that hygiene and sanitation are cornerstones of a healthier, more sustainable Metro Manila,” she said.

Oro Inodoro Awards, backed by Maynilad Water Services, Inc., is an annual awarding program that has been recognizing the best public restrooms in the country since 2016. The backbone of Oro Inodoro Awards lies in how a public restroom provides ginhawa to Filipinos. Beyond aesthetics and cleanliness, it takes into account accessibility, comfort, responsible wastewater management, and eco-friendly practices in running and maintaining the public restrooms.

Randolph Estrellado, Chief Operating Officer of Maynilad, emphasized in his keynote speech that a clean public restroom does not just provide conveniences, but promote public health and dignity.

“Let us not forget that sanitation is a shared responsibility. May we all be reminded that maintaining clean and safe facilities is a communal effort—one that requires collaboration among government agencies, private organizations, and every individual who uses these spaces,” Estrellado said.

“Maynilad reaffirms its commitment to pushing for greater access to proper sanitation and wastewater management. We look forward to working hand in hand with you all, to build communities that value hygiene and sustainability, ensuring that these ideals are carried into the future,” he elaborated.

The Oro Inodoro Awards, formerly called Golden Kubeta Awards, took in nominations from netizens through the Kubeta PH Facebook page. Finalists went through an evaluation and audit process conducted by a panel of experts.

Zamboanga turns page on siege with new SM Foundation school building

The SM Foundation and SM Prime turned over on Dec. 18 a newly built two-story school building to Sta. Barbara Central Elementary School in Zamboanga City, which was heavily ravaged during the Zamboanga siege in 2013.

School principal Anna Liza Martin says that none of the three multi-story school buildings of Sta. Barbara Central School survived the attacks as all of them were rendered unusable after the siege.

As the campus fell under the control of the insurgents who barricaded themselves inside the classrooms, all school facilities were either completely demolished or considered dangerous to use for everyday classes.

Aside from the classrooms, Martin says that all their learners lost considerable school hours, added with the stress and pressure of having to relocate to neighboring schools just to catch up.

Hindered from proper learning

Head teacher Alice Yusop, who was present during the attacks, says that even when neighboring campuses have hosted their learners, the shortage of teachers and facilities in other schools in the surrounding communities hindered their learners from receiving quality education.

“Six of us teachers had to follow them there so that we can teach them because those schools can barely accommodate them and we did not want them to lose any more school days,” Yusop says.

But the Zamboanga siege not only affected the learners’ school days, but their mental well-being, as well, according to the teacher.

“I remember one specific instance when, in one of our makeshift classrooms in a host campus, there was an explosion, but it was just an electric fuse box. I remember how the learners ran scared and crying. That was the toll on them. It was not only about losing school days, but it was also about their mental health,” she says.

Martin recalls how the school’s recovery was a very hard and long process.

Going back to the campus after the month-long attacks, they found almost nothing to build from and the memories of the attacks scattered all around them.

“It took more than five years for us to rebuild Sta. Barbara Central School,” she says.

Nidznalyn Kasim, one of the parents of Sta. Barbara Central School’s pupils, shares how the siege has dampened the spirits of the learners and the whole community in the aftermath.

“We were scared. But as there was also almost nothing left after the siege, we had to face the fact that our learners, the children might not have anywhere else to go in the meantime. It was very hard,” Kasim says.

Fresh start, new hope

Now, more than a decade later, as the SMFI continues to help ease the educational challenges caused by the siege as it turns over the new building to the teachers and the learners of Sta. Barbara Central School.

SMFI executive director for education programs Carmen Linda Atayde, in her speech during the turnover ceremony, says that it is the 109th school building that was donated by the foundation to schools all over the country. This is the second school building built by the foundation in Zamboanga.

The four-classroom building is equipped with electric fans for proper ventilation, toilets, and washbasins inside the classrooms.

The SMFI also furnished the classrooms with 25 left-handed armchairs, which were made by the PWD community in Manila, as well as facilities that can cater PWD learners and teachers.

The new building also has a clinic, a mini library, and a room dedicated to the arts and music.

Sta. Barbara Central School caters to almost 3,000 enrollees, 99 percent of whom are Muslim learners from nearby Barangays Sta. Barbara, Rio Hondo, Marique, and Kasanyagan.

The new building from the SMFI will be utilized by Grade 2 and Kindergarten learners.

“The opening of this school building indeed showed the learners that we can have a new start, that there are still sponsors who are willing to help pave the way so that they can have a brighter future despite what happened in the past,” Kasim says.

Martin says that the project brought with it new hope for the future, erasing from memory the trauma and the struggles that came with the attacks.

“The building effectively blocks remnants of the siege and has transformed Sta. Barbara Central School. There is no fear anymore and no more worries,” she says.

Believing in the power of education in uplifting communities, SM Foundation has been an active member of DepEd’s Adopt-a-School Program since 2002, turning over more than 100 school buildings to grassroots communities nationwide. The said program intends to address overcrowding in schools and provide an environment conducive for learning.

Nilahukan ito ng 267 na kalahok mula sa iba’t ibang katutubong pamayanan, lider ng indigenous cultural communities (ICCs), Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representatives (IPMR), ahensiya, institusyon, mag-aaral, at mga organisasyon. Sa unang araw ay nagtanghal ng ritwal ang Bugkalot.

Nagbigay ng mainit na bating pagtanggap si Denmark L. Yonson, PhD, Vice President for Student Success and Stakeholders Services ng Pamantasang Normal ng Pilipinas. No-Guilt Holiday Feast: Eight tips for using food labels to keep your kids healthy this Christmas season

THE HUNT FOR HEALTHIER OPTIONS. With so many choices on store shelves, reading food labels helps parents find healthier options for their children.

The holiday season means family gatherings, special meals, and often more sugary, processed foods on the table. Besides too much sugar and fats in their diets, many children do not receive the variety of food and nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. They are eating fewer fruits and vegetables while consuming more sugary, salty, and fatty foods, making balanced nutrition even harder to achieve.

In the Philippines, the number of overweight children—those weighing more than what’s healthy for their height and age—has almost tripled since 2003. Obesity is even more concerning, with a weight that is far above the healthy range, thus increasing the risk of problems like diabetes. Both overweight and obesity levels in the country are already considered “high” by global standards.

Health experts and the UN child rights agency UNICEF are advocating for the government to introduce front-of-package nutrition labels —simple symbols on food packages to quickly show if a product is high in sugar, salt, or unhealthy fats.

Understanding food labels

While mandatory front-of-package nutrition labels are being pushed, parents can still make smart choices by checking food labels at the back of every product. With so many baby snacks and convenient, ready-to-eat foods available, this small step can go a long way in keeping children healthy and happy. Here’s how you can make smarter picks at the grocery store this season.

1. Start with the serving size.

The serving size tells you how many servings each product contains and how many grams or pieces is considered as one serving. Take note that nutritional information will be based on just one serving. Consider this when serving your kids the product.

For example, the label might say “4 cookies” but a typical three-year-old child only needs about 1,350 calories daily. If one serving (4 cookies) contains 160 calories, and your child eats 8 cookies (160 calories per serving x 2 servings = 320) for the day, that’s already almost one-fourth of the daily energy needs.

2. Check the calories.

This number shows the energy your child gets from each serving. Here’s a quick guide to what children typically need per day:

1–3 years old: 920–1,000 kcal

4–6 years old: 1,200–1,400 kcal

7–9 years old: 1,400–1,800 kcal

10–12 years old: 1,800–2,200 kcal

13–18 years old: 2,000–2,600 kcal (boys) and 1,800–2,000 kcal (girls)

While having a snack is okay, keep in mind their other meals for the day. For example, serving 8 cookies is already equivalent to 320 calories, which may be fine for a teenager but may be too much for a four-year-old.

3. Limit unhealthy fats, added sugar, and salt.

Fats, sugar, and salt are fine in small amounts but should stay low to prevent unhealthy weight gain. Opt for snacks with:

Less than 5g of saturated fat

10g of added sugar

200mg of sodium per serving

4. Don’t just check the amount of fats, also the type.

Some food labels list “calories from fat,” or how much of the total energy in one serving comes from fats. For instance, if a snack has 160 calories per serving, and 70 come from fats, nearly half might not have come from healthy sources.

When it comes to fats, the type of fat is just as important as the amount. Healthy fats, like those from nuts, fish, and seeds, are important for brain development and energy. They even protect you from unhealthy saturated fats, often found in fried or processed foods. The World Health Organization recommends keeping saturated fats under 10% of daily calories and avoiding trans fats entirely to keep your child healthy.

5. Check the ingredients list.

Watch out for hidden sugars in the ingredients list. Often, these are called “sucrose” or “corn syrup.” Take note, as well, that the ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. This means that the first one or two ingredients mentioned in the list are the ones that make up the largest portion of the product.

6. Look for good nutrients.

Children need fiber, vitamins, and minerals (like iron and calcium) to grow strong and healthy. While some snacks add these nutrients, it’s best to find foods that naturally have them, like fruits and whole grains. For instance, children 4 to 6 years old need 300 mg of calcium and 10mg of iron daily. So, if a product offers at least 10–20% of these daily requirements, it’s a helpful addition to your kids’ meals.

7. Check the footnote.

The footnote explains the % Daily Value (DV), which is based on an adult’s daily nutrient needs. While children need fewer calories, you can still use the % DV to estimate the amount of nutrients in a product. For example, the image shows 0% DV for calcium, meaning the product does not provide it. Preschoolers need about 550 mg of calcium daily, so make sure their other snacks or meals can provide this.

8. Try balancing the % Daily Value.

The % DV shows how much one serving of the product provides toward our specific daily need of calories or certain nutrients. Aim for high percentages (20% or more) in nutrients like fiber, calcium, and iron, but keep sugar, salt, and fat low (5% or less). If a snack has 25% DV of sugar, it might be too sweet for younger kids, so consider a healthier alternative.

ARISE Philippines, the UNDRR Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies, celebrated the contributions of its network members and partners in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and sustainability during a Recognition Ceremony held on December 2, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center Manila. The event, themed “United Towards Resilience: Recognizing ARISE Philippines Network Members and Partners in Advancing a Resilient and Sustainable Future,” brought together over 200 participants, including government officials, private sector leaders, and other stakeholders.

Let us continue our work, pushing forward together with the strong support of our government partners. Let us double down on our united efforts as a society ‘United towards Resilience.’”

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was represented by Undersecretary Juan Miguel Cuna, standing in for Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, alongside Undersecretary Malu Erni and other DENR officials. Jeffrey Santos of the Mabalacat City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and Rodolfo Simeon of the Angeles CDRRMO spoke passionately about the importance of collaboration. PCol. Reynaldo Ogay Jr. of the Philippine National Police (PNP), FCSUPT. Renato Capuz of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and OCD Regional Director Amador Corpuz shared invaluable insights on strengthening disaster preparedness.

Call to action

During the ceremony, VAdm Alexander Pama (Ret.), ARISE Philippines Global Board Member, reflected on the achievements of the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024. He said, “We’re surging toward 2030 with disaster resilience as our goal, sustainability as its twin imperative, and a clear visioned determination to get our objectives done since resilience is not just something we talk about—it’s who we are.” He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in building resilient communities and called for sustained innovation to achieve the goals of the SFDRR.

Closing the event, Atty. Alexander Cabrera, Vice Chairperson of ARISE Philippines, delivered a message of gratitude, stating that resilience is a shared legacy that binds communities, sectors, and generations in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.

This unique initiative reimagines Filipino tradition by upcycling used Barong Tagalog garments into stunning and intricate Christmas decorations. Go Negosyo empowers OFWs at Balik-Bayan Summit in SM Mall of Asia

Go Negosyo recently held the “Balik-Bayan Summit 2024″ at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall to support Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families. With the theme, “Kabuhayan Para sa Kinabukasan,” the event featured P3 million in cash and in-kind prizes awarded to participants.

SM Prime’s long-standing commitment to energy efficiency earns ASEAN recognition

SM Prime Holdings is recognized in the Best Practices Competition for Energy Efficient Buildings at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Energy Awards 2024.

SM City Butuan, which opened in November 2020, was recognized under the New and Existing Building category after the Department of Energy (DOE) endorsed the mall’s entry to represent the Philippines for advancing energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) innovations to their mall designs and operations.

“This recognition is a testament to SM Prime’s dedication to building sustainable spaces across the Philippines. By showcasing energy-efficient practices in malls like SM City Butuan, we are actively contributing to a greener future for all,” said Hans Sy Jr., SM Engineering and Design Development President and SM Group sustainability champion.

The ASEAN Energy Awards (AEA) is the prestigious regional awarding body that acknowledges outstanding contributions to the energy sector in the region. The award aims to promote greater private sector engagement and investment in Southeast Asia’s energy development. For this year, the awards recognized organizations and companies’ commitment toward sustainable energy practices and innovation, featuring two major categories — Energy Efficiency and Conservation and Renewable Energy.

For decades, SM Prime has been innovating and incorporating EEC and renewable energy into its mall designs, construction, and processes, and has committed these practices to all of its projects. SM City Butuan best exemplifies SM Prime’s dedication to incorporating sustainable initiatives in its developments.

Prior to this award, the SM City Butuan was one of the awardees of the Energy Management of Buildings and Industries in the DOE’s Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards in 2023, under the New and Existing Building category. This is why the DOE endorsed the entry to the ASEAN Energy Awards.

For both awards, SM City Butuan had numerous sustainability and energy-saving features, which include passive and active design concepts, and on-site natural environmental integration.

The SM mall’s building envelope is Exterior Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS) to reduce indoor heat, and covered walkways provide shade.

Among its passive design features include the use of optimized building orientation to minimize solar heat gain, utilizes an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) for enhanced thermal protection, and the incorporation of canopies and low-emissivity glass for shading and daylighting. These design elements have been proven to significantly reduce the need for artificial cooling, providing greater savings in electricity use.

For its active design features, SM City Butuan employs a highly efficient water-cooled chiller plant with variable frequency drives (VFDs) on major equipment like kitchen exhaust fans. This technology optimizes energy use based on real-time demand. The mall also boasts 100% Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting, a hallmark of SM’s commitment to energy-efficient illumination.

Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting installed at the mall ceiling optimizes electricity consumption, while clerestory windows on the third floor of the mall allow natural lighting to enter.

SM City Butuan also integrates green spaces, hardscapes, and promotes natural ventilation, maximizing the use of the natural environment to create comfortable microclimates and reduce energy consumption.

These best practices, highlighted in SM City Butuan’s award entry, demonstrate SM Prime’s holistic approach to sustainability, incorporating innovative sustainability design strategies to minimize its environmental impact. This approach advocating environmental sustainability extends to its other mall developments.

SM City Butuan has a solar photovoltaic (PV) system installed on its roof deck, made up of 1,468 panels with a capacity of 851 kWp solar energy, which powers up to 13% of the mall’s electricity requirement.

Currently, 32 SM malls have self-used solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that are undergoing various stages of commissioning, testing, and final acceptance. These installations on top of the malls’ rooftops generate a total capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) of clean energy.

Furthermore, SM Prime contributes 259MW of power to the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) of the DOE and Energy Regulatory Commission, the highest contribution from the private sector. Among all these malls, SM Mall of Asia leads the charge, providing a committed capacity of 15.92 MW for every ILP activity.

These ongoing efforts reflect SM Prime’s unwavering dedication to sustainability and its ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
