Globe supports Senate bills that will amend the 26-year-old Intellectual Property Code to strengthen enforcement against online content piracy, measures that will protect the Filipino creative industries and customers who face risks online.

Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. have filed separate bills to strengthen the Intellectual Property Code, a parallel measure to House Bill No. 7600 by Rep. Joey Salceda of Albay’s 2nd District in the House of Representatives which passed third reading in May 2023.

These legislative efforts are designed to update Republic Act No. 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, which was established in 1997, well before online content piracy became prevalent.

“The Globe Group recognizes the urgent need to modernize the Intellectual Property Code, especially in the face of growing online threats such as online content piracy. It’s crucial to safeguard our creative industries, their workforce, and consumers who might unknowingly access malicious links on pirated websites, jeopardizing their personal data,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Amending the Intellectual Property Code to strengthen enforcement against online content piracy will institutionalize a landmark Memorandum of Understanding that the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recently signed with Globe and other leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the country to establish a site-blocking mechanism against pirate sites.

The MOU, the first of its kind in Asia, is a significant step forward against online content piracy as it establishes a voluntary site-blocking practice against the unauthorized distribution and sale of pirated content over the internet. The MOU also outlines the general principles and procedures for site blocking as it underscores collaboration between IPOPHL and ISPs.

Globe has consistently campaigned against online content piracy through the #PlayItRight initiative, promoting the protection of content creators in an era dominated by pirated materials.

As a member of the Video Coalition of the Philippines, established last year alongside major industry players and the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA), Globe has been at the forefront of advocating for robust intellectual property rights in the Philippines.

The proposed bills by Estrada and Revilla, both actors who are personally familiar with the perils of film piracy, aim to empower the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to restrict access to copyright-infringing sites and initiate site-blocking measures, supporting the creative sectors against rampant piracy.

Estrada’s Senate Bill 2150, submitted on May 9, 2023, suggests blocking access to websites promoting copyright violations and proposes fines of up to PHP1 million. Meanwhile, Revilla’s Senate Bill No. 2385, filed on August 1, 2023, focuses on enhancing the IPOPHL’s authority and responsibilities.

Estrada highlighted the significant spike in online film piracy during the COVID-19 pandemic, with illegal online links to Filipino films, including those from the 2020 Metro Manila Film Festival, being widely shared on social media.

The IPOPHL reported a noticeable increase in online piracy and counterfeiting activities in 2020, with the number of reports and complaints exceeding the average in the previous five years.

Surveys by YouGov, commissioned by the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP), suggest that enforcing site-blocking could greatly benefit the Philippines’ P1.6-trillion creative industries, which contributed 7.3% to the country’s economy in 2022.

While 58% of consumers in the country interact with pirated content, many are willing to pay for legitimate content if not available on pirated platforms. The survey showed varied preferences for legal content consumption, with 53% opting for subscription services, 15% for pay-per-view, 28% for cinema, 13% for Blu-Ray or DVD, and 39% for ad-supported media.

Filipino consumers overwhelmingly support government action against online content piracy. The survey revealed that 45% support ISP restrictions on pirate websites, 27% are in favor of banning Android TV Boxes that access pirated content, and 39% back the prohibition of apps offering pirated content access.

“The Globe Group recognizes the urgent need to modernize the Intellectual Property Code, especially in the face of growing online threats such as online content piracy. It’s crucial to safeguard our creative industries, their workforce, and consumers who might unknowingly access malicious links on pirated websites, jeopardizing their personal data,” wika ni Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Henry Sy, Sr. during MOA Opening in 2006

When the Mall of Asia opened in 2006, Henry Sy, Sr. was walking around the SM Store alongside Ma. Cecilia Abreu, who was then Assistant Vice President for Store Operations.

As is usually the case with Mr. Sy, he dropped by the Shoe section, checked the shoes and sandals, and then asked a few questions to the sales clerks. “Marami pa ba nito? Are these fast-moving?”

The questions did not stop there. Holding one sandal, he asked Abreu a question that stayed with her: “Can our customers still afford to buy our sandals at this price?”

“Ang iniisip niya talaga is kaya pa ba ‘to ng customer. Very consistent si Mr. Sy when understanding his customers, what they want, and what they need,” Abreu shared.

That consistency in understanding its market has stayed with SM through the years. Providing customers with affordable and quality items goes way back to Tatang – the name Mr. Sy, Sr. was fondly called by those whose lives he touched.

Once an Assistant Branch Manager of SM Makati, Abreu has a lot of stories about Tatang.

“Meron rin kaming isang customer. Nagdadala siya ng maraming bag. Hindi naman siya bumibili. Then she would always look for Mr. Sy. Uupo siya dun sa daanan ng lobby namin. Sasabihan namin si Tatang, Sir andyan na naman ho yung lady na palaging naghahanap sa inyo. Tatang would tell us with a smile on his face, ‘let her sit there.’”

 Honoring commitments, respecting hard work

Continuing the story of the SM Makati customer, Chelo Monasterio, once an SM Makati Branch Manager, said, “Tatang feels that SM is for everyone. That’s why di ba kahit pag typhoon, we will open. It was because, for Mr. Sy, we are a shelter for people.”

Monasterio joined SM 41 years ago, back when there were only three stores: Quiapo, Cubao, and Ermita. Climbing the ladder from HR manager, SM Makati Branch Manager to becoming SM Store President, and now a Consultant for SM Retail, Monasterio shared with pride, “We were trained by Tatang. So what we think, what we impart came from him. He molded us to be what we are. He managed us but he did not make us scared of him. We could tell him how we felt and he would never take it against us. He listened to what people had to say.”

Shoemart Makati in the 1980s

According to Monasterio, Tatang was not flowery with his words. He was very direct to the point. These words, simple as they may seem, but for her, “these are the words that I carry with me.” In one instance, Tatang told her. “Chelo, there are two traits that you should have that will make you successful. One, you have to have common sense. And the other one is you have to have industry.”

With a smile, remembering those days at SM Makati as Branch Manager, Monasterio shared, “Mr. Sy mentored me on selling operations. He would help me in the morning and talk to me about merchandising, about shoes. He would talk about how to handle people including suppliers – that you have to be kind and that you have to honor your commitments to them because that will dictate your reputation.”

Tatang liked to spend time and talk and share his dreams and aspirations.

“When he shares it with you, you feel a certain affinity – that you belong and that you’re gonna help him with his vision,” Monasterio said.

Believing in your vision and your people

On Mr. Sy’s last visit touring SM Store’s Distribution Center in Paranaque, Rose Siaco still remembers what he told her, “This is a bonus, Rose, and it’s not part of my vision.”

The Distribution Center (DC) is where SM Store’s suppliers drop their products for transfer to SM Store branches and Retail affiliates across the Philippines.

SM DRAW

In 1978, Siaco was a practicing Medical Technologist who dared to try something outside of her comfort zone. She started her journey as Shoemart Inc.’s Supplies Officer that year. This is where her organizational skills and attention to detail would come in handy.

Seeing that Siaco thrives on challenges, she was given the task by Mr. Sy of becoming an acting warehouse manager. “I told him that it’s a man’s world, but he told me to train as a warehouse manager. He said to me, ‘I need your talent. I don’t need your physical strength. That would be too taxing for you,’” Siaco shared.

This encouraged her and inspired her to enroll in management courses. “Talagang nag train ako. I attended seminars. Those were the days na pag nag attend ako ng seminar, I was the only female participant,” Siaco further added.

For her, Tatang is really a disciplinarian, like a strict teacher. “If you make a mistake, i-cocorrect ka na niya – on the spot. Ganun siya mag train.” She also said that he also informed the affected staff of the consequences of the mistake.

Other than thriving on new challenges, Siaco shared the reason why she stayed with SM for 45 years: “Kaya rin ako nagtagal, I don’t feel that they are other people. They treat their employees like family.”

Stories shared, vision realized

Abreu shared another anecdote. “Supermarket. After his usual ‘rounds,’ Tatang bade farewell to everyone. He got into his car but before the car even left, Mr. Sy got out of the car. Everyone was still outside, waving and thanking him for the visit. Mr. Sy said in a clear voice ‘I want to thank each and every one of you for your hard work.’”

Sharing his vision, telling stories, and words of gratitude are the ways in which Henry Sy, Sr. showed he cared. Now, his employees and colleagues from the small stores of Quiapo and Makati continue to tell his stories and help the company realize his vision.

All Eyes on Manila for FAPHL 2023

Franchise Asia Philippines (FAPHL) 2023 continues this coming October with one of the biggest weeks in the global franchising calendar happening here in Manila!

This October, Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) is proud to present a jampacked week of networking, business meetings and expo as part of the PFA’s tools to grow, strengthen and advocate for the Philippine franchising sector.

Mr. Joseph Tanbuntiong, the Overall Chair of the FAPHL 2023 Organizing Committee and Chief Business Officer of Jollibee Foods Corporation, stated after the International Conference was held in June 2023 to a positive reception from various members of the franchising industry, the PFA is bracing for what is to be one of the biggest events in franchising history: the International Franchise Expo on October 27 to 29, 2023 coinciding with the meetings of the World Franchise Council (WFC) and Asia-Pacific Franchise Confederation (APFC) which will both be hosted by the Philippines in Manila.

PFA President Chris Lim hopes FAPHL 2023 will be an avenue for more Philippine brands to go international and Filipino small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to expand domestically.

International Franchise Expo

After the triumphant conference drew crowds of members of the franchising community, the PFA is once again bringing the entire franchising world to Manila for what is one of the Asia-Pacific region’s biggest franchise shows: the Franchise Asia Philippines 2023 International Franchise Expo at the entirety of the SMX Convention Center, Manila.

According to Mr. Lim, the Expo is an opportunity for Filipino brands to grow their businesses internationally as well as for global brands to expand their operations to the Philippines. He also considers this an event to place the Philippines in the map of the global franchising community.

Sherill Quintana, the Association’s Chairman, has the Expo to thank for the success of her own company Oryspa, which joined the show in 2011 and is now a prosperous enterprise not just in the Philippines but also overseas. She calls her personal experience with the Expo as a testament on how SMEs can grow and expand to greater heights.

This year’s Expo is one of the biggest PFA will ever organize as it will occupy both floors of the SMX Convention Center in Manila. Expo Committee Chair and Bo’s Coffee President and CEO Steve Benitez stated that 1000+ international and local franchise brands in the food, retail and service sectors will be featured this year. He said there will also be special zones for Emerging Franchises, Highly Franchise-able Concepts, Business Solutions Providers among others.

In line with the PFA’s capacity-building efforts, the Expo will also have seminars for prospective franchisees and aspiring franchisors.

Philippine hosting of global franchise events

Coinciding with the Expo is the twin meetings of the Asia-Pacific Franchise Confederation (APFC) and the World Franchise Council (WFC) hosted by the Philippines at Conrad Manila on October 25-27, 2023. This event promises to be an opportunity for the Philippines to show its economic progress as well as its famous hospitality to international visitors.

These events, along with the other activities on Franchise Asia week, will be attended by hundreds of delegates from 30 franchise association members of the WFC, including 16 from the Asia-Pacific region that comprise the APFC and 16 European national franchise associations.

 ‘Successful’ international conference

Prior to these upcoming events, the Franchise Asia Philippines 2023 International Conference was held on June 7-8, 2023 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City with the theme ‘Franchising Fast Forward.’ The event garnered a total of 808 participants, mostly franchisors and entrepreneurs of different backgrounds in the food, retail and service sectors. Conference Committee Chair and Wendy’s Philippines President and CEO Joey Garcia has declared the event a success through its well-attended breakout and plenary sessions featuring lectures and discussions on diverse issues affecting the franchising world.

The Conference also saw seven (7) highly dynamic and curated plenary sessions and 12 engaging concurrent area-focused track sessions, 30+ peer-to-peer business roundtable discussions and 70+ world-class speakers, industry experts and esteemed facilitators. Among its roster of speakers, the Conference also featured the CEO Forum with the CEOs of McDonald’s, Max’s Group, Inc. and 7-Eleven sharing their business ideas and strategies for continuous success.

During the NxtGen in Franchising Competition and Awarding Ceremonies, Ms. Di Anne Mendoza from the Breastfeeding Care Center of the North was declared the Grand Winner.

GLOBE

Globe has announced it is offering free connectivity, including roaming call, text and data to Filipinos in Israel to help them keep in touch with loved ones amid reports of the worst militant attacks in the area.

Globe postpaid and prepaid customers currently using roaming services in Israel may connect with their loved ones with free 15 minutes of incoming and outgoing calls, 15 texts to all networks, and 1GB data (whichever service is currently available) good for 7 days at no extra cost.

To avail of the free roaming service, Globe customers only need to connect to Globe’s roaming partners Cellcom, Partner Communications and Pelephone.  No registration is required for the goodwill offer, and this free roaming service will be automatically provided to Globe customers currently in Israel.  A confirmation message will be sent to customers advising them that the free roaming offer is ready for use.

“Globe is immediately providing connectivity support to Filipinos in Israel as conflict grips the Middle Eastern nation, where thousands of our kababayans live and work. Through free roaming access, we hope to help them reach their loved ones at home at this difficult time,” said Coco Domingo, Globe VP for Postpaid and International Business.

To make a call, dial “+” plus country code, area code and telephone number (ex. +63773101212) or dial “+” plus country code and mobile number (ex. +639171234567). To send a text, type “+” plus country code and mobile number (ex. +639171234567).

To use the free 1GB data allocation, customers simply need to turn on mobile data and data roaming on their phone’s settings, and set the network connection to 3G or LTE. Postpaid customers are encouraged to only turn on their mobile data and data roaming once they have received the activation message.

News reports indicate that militants have infiltrated Israel’s southern areas with the largest rocket attack in years, leaving dozens killed and hundreds wounded.

Globe regularly provides free roaming to customers nationwide in times of crises, most recently in Morocco following the historic 6.8 quake that struck near Marrakech last September.
